Lincoln's first inauguration, on March 4, 1861, is the event this sheet reports, and the newspaper's own printed account of the ceremony and his inaugural address sets it apart from the many images of him on this board. The address was delivered at a moment of deep crisis, as seven Southern states had already seceded from the Union and the country was on the edge of war. Lincoln's appeal to the South, that he had no intention of interfering with slavery where it existed, and his closing plea for "the better angels of our nature" made the speech widely discussed in the days that followed. Papers like this one carried the full text to readers who had little other way to hear the president's words.
