Ottokar Marak is pictured in connection with *The Bartered Bride*, the comic opera by Bedřich Smetana that premiered in Prague in 1866 and became a cornerstone of Czech national identity. The Bain News Service, a New York press photography agency active in the early twentieth century, made this glass negative, but the title comes from unverified caption data, so the production and date should be treated as tentative. The image's posed, studio-like presentation reflects how performers were often photographed for publicity in that period.
