A pink dress trimmed with violets sets this embossed postcard apart from the rabbits, eggs and chicks that usually fill Easter cards of its era. Embossed cards were popular in the Edwardian years, roughly 1901 to 1910, when printers pressed raised patterns into the card stock to give colored lithographs a tactile, almost sculpted finish. Cards like this were mailed to wish friends and relatives well at Easter, and the violet, a traditional spring flower, signaled the season as clearly as any egg. The gilt-edged border and soft pastel palette are worth a closer look, since they show how much care went into even inexpensive holiday ephemera.
