Two girls in bonnets and a cat share the foreground of this embossed Easter postcard, a sort of greeting card that was hugely popular in the early twentieth century. Embossing gave the printed surface a raised, textured feel, and makers often added gilt highlights and bright colors to flowers, eggs and holiday motifs. Cards like this were sent through the mail to wish friends and relatives a happy holiday, so the handwritten message on the back, if any survives, often says as much about daily life as the picture does. Look closely at the raised edges and gold accents to see how the printers built the design.
