Few details survive about this glass-plate negative beyond the sitter's name, Howard E. Coffin, an automotive engineer and co-founder of the Hudson Motor Car Company in Detroit. He later became known for his work on the Naval Consulting Board during World War I, when industrialists and inventors advised the government on military technology. The Bain News Service, which made and distributed news photographs in New York from the early 1900s, produced many portraits like this one of public figures for newspaper use. Because the record gives no date, the portrait is best understood as one of the service's pictures of prominent men in business and engineering during the early twentieth century.
