A color lithograph from 1919, this poster takes its title from the unit it advertises, Reichswehr Brigade 25, billed as the "Deutsche Schutzdivision," or German protection division, and its call "Freiwillige melden sich" asks volunteers to step forward. It was printed in the chaotic months after Germany's defeat, when the new republic was rebuilding its armed forces under the Treaty of Versailles, which capped the army at 100,000 men. Recruiting posters like this one were a common way to fill those ranks, and the catalog also lists coats of arms among its subjects, a reminder of how heraldic and national symbols were used to lend these units legitimacy.
