Dressed in a broad-brimmed hat and dark, plain clothing, the figure here carries a musket through a snow-covered wood beside a woman, a pairing that reaches back to the popular Victorian picture of the Pilgrim Fathers. Artists of the late 1800s and early 1900s returned again and again to the Plymouth colonists, whose 1621 harvest gathering was later cast as the first Thanksgiving. Scenes like this one turned a hard winter of settlement into a story of faith, self-reliance and family, and they were often printed and sold as illustrations for holiday cards and magazines. Look at the bare trees and deep snow, which emphasize the isolation the colonists faced.
