The sitter is recorded only as Mrs. Geo. Ethridge, a married woman identified through her husband's name, a common practice in early newspaper and portrait photography. The Bain News Service, founded by George Grantham Bain in New York, supplied images to newspapers from about 1900 until the 1920s, and its glass negatives record the faces and fashions of that period. The caption attached to this one is unverified, so the identity of the sitter remains uncertain. Even so, the negative shows how studio and press portraits of the era were often made quickly and filed under the names of the people who appeared in them.
