The title, *Emprunt de la Libération*, means "Liberation Loan," a name that tied a government bond drive to the hope of recovering northern French territory occupied by Germany since 1914. Issued in 1918 as the war neared its end, the loan asked ordinary citizens, not just banks and wealthy investors, to lend money to the state. Posters like this one were central to such campaigns, using bold lettering and patriotic appeals to persuade shopkeepers, farmers and office workers to subscribe.
