A sailor-suited child cradling a heart sets this valentine apart from the roses, cupids and lace that dominated the genre. Sailor suits became fashionable for young boys in the later 19th century, partly thanks to their association with navy uniforms and the rise of seaside holidays, so a card built around one reflects the sentimental imagery of its era. Valentines of this period were often mass-produced with embossed or chromolithographed designs and were exchanged between family members, friends and sweethearts. Notice how the cheerful, idealized child carries the sentiment, a common device in Victorian and Edwardian greeting cards.
