Labeled with Jacob Riis's name, this glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, though the record notes that the title rests on unverified caption data supplied by the Bain News Service. Riis, a Danish-born journalist who worked in New York, became widely known through his 1890 book *How the Other Half Lives*, which used flash photographs to expose conditions in the city's tenements. The Bain agency, also based in New York, distributed news photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date for this negative, so when and why it was made remains uncertain.
