The Providence Athenaeum, a subscription library in Providence, Rhode Island, is the subject here, and its history gives the picture much of its interest. Founded in 1836, the institution was built around a membership model that let proprietors borrow books and use a reading room long before most American towns had public libraries. Libraries of this kind were central to the intellectual life of nineteenth-century New England, serving merchants, clergy, writers and mill-town readers alike. Worth noticing in the scene are the tall shelves and the reading arrangements, which reflect how such collections were housed and used.
