The Providence Public Library's stack house, pictured here, shows the working heart of a building designed for books first. Rows of iron shelving rise between narrow aisles, and the cast-iron framing and open floors were meant to hold heavy volumes safely while letting light and air move through the space. Libraries of this era often expanded by adding stacks like this one, so the room reflects how public reading grew into a civic service. Look closely at the shelving and lighting to see how the staff balanced access, storage, and safety.
