Foochow is the older Romanized spelling of Fuzhou, the capital of Fujian Province on the Min River in southeastern China. The city was one of five treaty ports opened to foreign trade under the 1842 Treaty of Nanking, which drew merchants, missionaries and diplomats there in the following decades. This glass negative comes from the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency that distributed news and feature photographs in the early twentieth century. The record gives no date or photographer, and the title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negative or its card, so the exact view and its moment remain uncertain.
