The record gives only a bare title, "Fireplace," with no place, date, or maker beyond the Bain News Service, so this glass negative has to be read through its collection. The George Grantham Bain Collection holds some 40,000 negatives made by the Bain News Service, a press photo agency that operated in New York from about 1899 into the 1920s and supplied images of people, buildings, and events to newspapers. Its glass plates were often captioned in haste, so a title like this one is worth treating as a working label rather than a verified description. Taken alone, the picture shows a hearth and its surroundings, a subject that could record a domestic interior, a public room, or a building feature photographed for reference.
