Few rooms in the Resettlement Administration files show the working side of a sharecropper's home as plainly as this view of an Alabama kitchen. Walker Evans made it around 1935 or 1936, while documenting tenant farming in the cotton country, and it belongs to a group of pictures assembled into an album of one family's house. Kitchens like this were often small and shared with cooking, washing and storage, and the bare shelves and worn utensils say a good deal about how little a cotton tenant household could own.
