Few holiday postcards pair a roasting turkey with a waving flag quite like this one, a combination that reflects how closely Thanksgiving and national pride were tied in the early twentieth century. Picture postcards of this kind were enormously popular in the decades around 1900 to 1920, when mailing a card was a common way to send holiday wishes cheaply and quickly. Designs often layered harvest symbols such as fruit and grain alongside patriotic emblems, presenting the holiday as both a family feast and a celebration of the country. Look closely at the lettering and color printing, which show the lithographic techniques used to mass-produce cards like this one.
