Arnold Henry Savage Landor, the English explorer and author the caption names, is best known for his 1897 journey into Tibet, where Tibetan officials seized him, held him, and tortured him before he was released. He wrote about the ordeal in *In the Forbidden Land* (1898), which drew wide attention in Britain and the United States. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, produced and distributed photographs of newsworthy people like him from about 1900 into the 1920s. The record gives no date, so the year this portrait was made is unknown.
