This glass negative is one of the Bain News Service pictures showing American nurses in France. The title, which reads "U.S. nurses in Fr.," comes from caption cards and has not been independently verified, and the record gives no date. Still, the subject points to the First World War, when the Army Nurse Corps and the American Red Cross sent nurses to hospitals behind the lines with the American Expeditionary Forces. The Bain agency, a New York wire service, distributed photographs like this one to newspapers, so the image was made for public consumption as well as for the record.
