A sentimental Valentine's card set a pair of figures inside a large red heart, a design that belongs to the boom in mass-produced greeting cards that took hold in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Printers at the time turned out embossed and chromolithographed cards in bright inks, and the heart, a shorthand for romantic love, was among the most common motifs. Cards like this were often exchanged in school classrooms and between sweethearts, so they show how Valentine's Day moved from handwritten notes to a commercial custom. Look closely at the lettering and the decorative border, which reveal much about the printing methods of the period.
