The caption identifies the sitter as Senator Penrose, most likely Boies Penrose, the Republican from Pennsylvania who served in the U.S. Senate from 1897 until his death in 1921 and became one of the most powerful party leaders in Washington. The record gives no date, and the title comes from caption data that the Bain News Service wrote on the negative or its card, so the identification has not been independently confirmed. The Bain agency, a New York photo service, supplied news pictures of politicians, public figures and events in the early twentieth century, and this glass negative reflects that working press archive.
