Two gasoline advertising signs share this record: the Texaco Fire-Chief and Texaco Motor Oil signs, both from the company's mid-20th-century marketing. The Fire-Chief brand was Texaco's premium gasoline, and its red star-and-fire-chief emblem was a familiar roadside sight across the country. Signs like these were built to be read at highway speed, so their bold lettering and simple color blocks were deliberate. They show how motor fuel was sold as much through the roadside landscape as through the pump itself.
