Cupid appears here as a grizzled prospector, pick over his shoulder, announcing that he has "struck it rich" and addressing the card to his Valentine. The joke draws on the gold rush, which had long shaped American popular culture, from the California strike of 1848 to the Klondike rush of the late 1890s. Comic Valentines like this were mass-produced and mailed in large numbers in the early twentieth century, and they often borrowed familiar figures and slang to make a sentimental holiday playful. The pairing of romance with a get-rich-quick boast reflects how thoroughly mining imagery had entered everyday humor by then.
