Ladders lean against the stepped adobe walls of this pueblo street, a common sight in Southwestern villages where upper-story rooms were reached from the roof rather than from the ground. Stereoviews like this one were popular in the late 1800s, when Americans read them through handheld viewers to see distant places in three dimensions. Pueblo households dried corn and other crops on their rooftops after the autumn harvest, which gives the scene a fitting link to the season. Look closely at the layered doorways and the rough texture of the mud-plastered walls.
