Four Boston Red Sox players sit together in the dugout, with Babe Ruth among them, the young left-handed pitcher who was then becoming one of the team's most valuable arms. Ernie Shore, Rube Foster and Del Gainer complete the group, and the picture captures the informal side of a ballclub in the mid-1910s, when teammates spent long afternoons waiting between innings. Shore is remembered for the 1917 game in which he relieved Ruth and retired every batter he faced after Ruth was ejected, a performance that still earns a mention in baseball histories. The record does not say what the players are drinking, so the beverage theme of this board is a matter for the viewer to judge.
