Harvard's football practice is the subject here, captured during a dummy tackle, a drill in which a player drove his shoulder into a padded figure to learn how to bring down a runner. Bain News Service, the New York photo agency whose glass negatives make up the George Grantham Bain Collection, sold news and sports pictures to newspapers in the early 1900s, and this plate fits that period, though the record gives no exact date. Coaches of the era relied heavily on drills like this because tackling technique was still being refined in a rough game. Harvard, just across the Charles River from Boston, was one of the sport's leading programs at the time.
