A bearded figure in a loose robe, clutching a book against his chest, anchors this red chiaroscuro print, a technique that flourished in early sixteenth-century Italy and Germany. Chiaroscuro woodcuts were printed from two or more blocks, with a tonal block that built shadow and light in a single inked color, so the image reads more like a drawing in wash than a line engraving. Prints of scholars and philosophers like this one were popular among collectors who valued learning, and the red ink gives the figure a warm, almost glowing presence against the paper.
