The Jardin des Plantes, Paris's royal botanical garden on the Left Bank, traces its origins to the Jardin du Roi in the seventeenth century, and by the nineteenth it was a popular place for public outings. This print, dated 8 September, shows a kermesse, or outdoor fair, held in the garden. Its place on a ballooning board reflects how closely fairs and aerial ascents were linked in France, where balloon flights from the 1780s on drew large crowds and became a favorite public spectacle.
