Henri Labrouste designed the Bibliothèque Sainte-Geneviève on the slope of Mont Sainte-Geneviève in Paris, and its reading room, which opened in 1850, put a visible iron framework and slender columns beneath a row of domed ceilings. That exposed structure surprised many architects of the day, who were used to hiding supports behind masonry. The engraving comes from page 674 of a larger publication, so it was probably meant to introduce readers to a building that was new and much discussed.
