Drawn in India ink over pencil and dated 1973 in the upper left, this sheet takes its title from the White House tapes, the recordings Richard Nixon made of conversations in his office that became central to the Watergate investigation that year. The drawing was published as an illustration for Senator Donald W. Riegle's article "The Ford Nomination as a Way Out," which appeared around November 29, 1973, weeks after Gerald Ford was nominated to succeed Spiro Agnew as vice president. Its caricature line work shows how cartoonists of the period used the tapes as shorthand for a government weighed down by secrecy and mistrust.
