Here a woman in plain dress offers drinks to wounded Continental soldiers, a scene that captures the heart of Howard Pyle's subject. Pyle drew it for his 1889 article on the Dunkers, a German-descended Pennsylvania sect known for plain dress, simple living, and refusal to bear arms. Their pacifism did not keep them from caring for the injured during the Revolution, when soldiers from both sides sometimes ended up in their homes. The wood engraving translates Pyle's drawing into a form suited to the magazine page, and its careful detail reflects his interest in period life.
