This glass negative is catalogued under the name William G. Sharp, a Cleveland lawyer who served as United States ambassador to France from 1914 to 1919, through most of the First World War. The Library of Congress notes that the title comes from caption cards and data supplied by the Bain News Service, so the identification has not been fully verified and the exposure date is unknown. Bain's New York agency made many portraits like this one of officials and newsmakers for newspapers, and the plates preserve the look of early news photography.
