The only name attached to this glass negative is Joe Shultz, a title taken from caption cards that the Bain News Service supplied, and the record notes that it has not been verified. George Grantham Bain founded the New York agency around 1899 to sell news photographs to newspapers and magazines. With no date recorded, the picture is best understood through that working method: the agency filed its negatives by name and subject so that images could be pulled quickly for publication. The identity is a useful starting point for further research rather than a confirmed fact.
