Chrysanthemums take center stage in this poster for a "Direct to mum show" at the Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago. The conservatory, a large glass greenhouse on the city's West Side, was a popular venue for flower exhibitions. The poster was sponsored by the Federal Art Project, one of the New Deal arts programs run under the Works Progress Administration, which hired artists to make public-notice posters during the Depression. Its silkscreen printing and bold flat color show the style those programs favored. A later hand-written date of 1941 appears on the back.
