Hens, chicks and willow catkins make up the whole scene on this Easter greetings card, and the pairing says a good deal about how spring holidays were marketed. Easter cards of this kind, popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, leaned on rural motifs: fowl and newborn chicks stood for renewal, while the furry catkins of pussy willow were among the first signs of spring in many European and American gardens. Cards like this were mailed or tucked into church and home celebrations, so the sentiment was meant to be read quickly and warmly.
