Westfield, Connecticut, in 1875 was one of the many modest communities whose fortunes were tied to the wider economy of the state, where mills, machine shops, and farms employed most local families. The decade after the Civil War brought steady industrial growth across Connecticut, and the railroads and river trade made it easier for local goods to reach markets in New York and Boston. Public life centered on churches, schools, town meetings, and the lodges and fraternal societies that met in halls above the village stores. Residents would have known Westfield as a place where neighbors worked, worshipped, and voted side by side, and where the pace of life still followed the seasons as much as the factory whistle.

NotesAn original bird's-eye view map of Westfield, Connecticut, drawn in 1875. Bird's-eye view maps were drawn by travelling artists who walked a town street by street, sketching every building from an imagined vantage point in the air, then sold the finished lithograph door to door by subscription. Roughly five thousand American towns were recorded this way between the 1860s and the 1920s, and for many of them the panoramic map is the most complete picture of the place that survives.
