The sleeve for this glass negative gives the title "Custer," which may refer to George Armstrong Custer, the cavalry officer who became one of the best-known figures of the Civil War, though the identification is unverified. The picture is dated 1860, a year before the war began, and it was made with the wet collodion process, which required photographers to coat, expose and develop each glass plate within minutes. Alexander Gardner, who later made well-known Civil War photographs, was once credited as its maker, but that attribution is no longer accepted. Shown among Gettysburg images, it is best read as an example of photographic practice on the eve of the war.
