Cabbages with faces are the unusual feature here, since most Halloween postcards of this era show witches, black cats, pumpkins or jack-o'-lanterns. Early twentieth-century American and European holiday cards often personified vegetables and fruit in comic scenes, and the verse printed alongside the figures gave the card its joke. Postcards like this were mailed between friends and family in the weeks before October 31, when the holiday was still largely a home and neighborhood celebration with parties, games and fortune-telling. Look at the lettering and color printing, which show how lithographic methods of the period were used to make cheap, colorful cards for a mass market.
