The subject of this glass negative is named as Hobart Reese, a title the National Photo Company recorded on the negative or its sleeve but that has not been independently verified. The February 7, 1922, exposure is one of the 8 by 6 inch glass plates the company's Washington, D.C., studios made in the early twentieth century, when glass remained a standard medium for commercial portraits and documentary views. Plates of this age often show streaks and faint blemishes as their light-sensitive coatings deteriorate, so those marks are worth noticing. The plate reached the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift.
