Little is recorded about this glass negative beyond its title, "Senor J.B. Calvo," which the library notes comes from unverified caption information, so the sitter's identity and the occasion remain unconfirmed. It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the body of work produced by the Bain News Service, a New York picture agency founded around 1899 that supplied newspapers with news photographs for about three decades. Its small glass plates were made for quick reproduction in print, which makes this one a useful example of how the agency recorded people in the news in the early twentieth century.
