Michelin's tire advertisement in the 1919 Literary Digest speaks to a moment when the automobile was moving from novelty to necessity in American life. The French tire maker used the mass-circulation weekly, which reached a broad middle-class readership, to sell its traction surface tread to motorists who were dealing with rough, unpaved roads and frequent blowouts. Postwar magazine ads like this one show how quickly rubber and tread design had become a selling point, and they reveal the marketing language manufacturers used to win over drivers at the start of the car age.
