The Gateway Arch in St. Louis is the detail that sets this picture apart: a stainless steel span rising over the riverfront grounds, with visitors moving along the paths below. Designed by Eero Saarinen and completed in 1965, the arch was built as the centerpiece of the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial, a tribute to the westward expansion that began with the Louisiana Purchase and the city's role as a launching point for travelers heading west. Its near-equal height and width, about 630 feet, make it the tallest human-made monument in the United States, and the scene shows how it dominates the open ground around it.
