Few objects connect Benjamin Franklin to his working years as directly as this printing press, which the title places in 1725-26. Franklin arrived in London in late 1724 looking for printing work and spent the next year and a half as a journeyman in several London shops, including those of Samuel Palmer and John Watts, before sailing home in 1726. The skills he sharpened there, from setting type to running a press, carried into his Philadelphia printing business and his later newspaper and almanac work. This photographic print shows the press as a physical link to that stretch of his career.
