A tatami-floored inn room, sketched in fine ink lines, takes up this drawing from a Japanese book. Such illustrations were a staple of woodblock-printed books in the Edo period (1603 to 1868), when travel guides, novels and encyclopedias used pictures to show everyday life. Rooms like this one, with sliding paper screens, low tables and sleeping futons stored in closets, would have been familiar to travelers on the great highways between cities. Look closely at the careful crosshatching and the simple placement of objects, which show how the artist used restraint to convey a sense of quiet hospitality.
