Titled "The Fireman No. 2," this print is numbered as the second in a series, and its caption fragment, "Near as fire," points to a blaze close at hand. Its copyright entry is dated March 3, 1838, when American cities depended largely on volunteer fire companies that raced hand-pumped engines to alarms, often with fierce rivalry between crews. Prints like this one reflected public fascination with those men, who were both neighborhood helpers and local celebrities. A shelflist card links the print to the name Harrison & Weightman, but that attribution is unverified.
