Hale's Honey of Horehound and Tar was a patent cough remedy sold in the United States from the late nineteenth century into the early twentieth, and this advertisement puts its name and folk-remedy appeal front and center. Horehound, a bitter mint-family herb, had long been used in home medicine for coughs and sore throats, while the tar in the mix reflected the old belief that pine tar soothed the chest. Patent medicines like this one were promoted heavily in newspapers and on posters, often with bold claims that were rarely checked before the Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 began to regulate labeling. Worth noticing is how the ad sells reassurance as much as the product itself.
