In 1909, Willimantic was still a mill town in the Windham area of eastern Connecticut, but its thread works had changed hands. The American Thread Company, formed in 1898 by combining several New England thread makers, now controlled the largest local mills, so decisions about wages and output were made in distant offices. Along the streets near the river, the town's residents also looked to the Connecticut State Normal School, which had opened here in 1889 to train teachers, and whose students gave the village a steady population of young people from across the state. Electric streetcars had by then begun to carry workers and shoppers between the mills, the business blocks, and the outlying neighborhoods, and the town's civic life centered on its churches, fraternal halls, and lodges.
