Its title sets the terms of the appeal: "Weapons of death, weapons of life! Subscribe to the Victory Loan." Rather than showing soldiers or battlefields, the poster places the blacksmith and the plow beside the instruments of war, presenting the work of farm and forge as part of the same national effort. The Prestito della Vittoria was one of Italy's wartime government bond drives, and in 1918, the last year of the war, posters like this one urged ordinary citizens to lend their savings to the state.
