Unlike the posters around it, this sheet is a working architectural drawing: two elevations, or flat front views, of the Gayety and Capitol theaters in Washington, D.C., dated 1918. Builders and owners used drawings like these to plan a building's street face before construction, so they show proportions, ornament, and entrance design rather than how the buildings looked in use. The subject headings place the sheet among designs for theaters and motion picture houses from the 1910s, when films were spreading quickly into American cities and purpose-built cinemas were joining older playhouses. The ink and graphite linework is worth a close look for its precision.
