It belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the work of the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers from around 1899 into the early 1930s. The record gives no date, so the image is best understood in that setting: glass negatives were the standard working medium for press photographers of the period, and they preserve the portraits and events that filled American newspapers at the time.
